Nexus One Data Only

Last year at Google I/O 2010 everyone got an Evo 4G. At the time I was using the Nexus One on Tmobile. I got a change to compare the phones and networks side by side and in the end decided to switch to Sprint. While Tmobile’s 3G seems faster, Sprints was more reliable. I still had a year left on my contract with tmobile though.

I haven’t been using my Tmobile phone, it has been shut off for two months only turning on to check out new Android builds.

Yesterday I went into the Tmobile store and asked the change the type of plan from unlimited talk text and web to the Even More webConnect. I figured I’d at least try to lower my bill for a phone I no longer use. The salesman asked if I needed a device and I said no I already have one. Everything went smooth after that and my plan was changed. I then got home and placed the new sim card in my Nexus One, powered it on and vuala!, I had internet.

A few notes:

- I talked to another Tmobile rep and they said it still might switch over and I may lose data connectivity on my phone. As of 1/24/11 it is still working. I will update this post if it ever stops.
- When I try to make calls from the nexus one, it says “calling has been disabled for this device”.
Click here for a screen shot of the My Account app from tmobile on the nexus one. Notice that it says that I am on the Even More webConnect plan.

So far everything is working well. Having a data only phone should come in handy in the next few months as I start traveling. Wifi hotspot ftw.
